T2-z: Test-Time Optimization of Environment Latents for Robotic World Models
Predicting how the world responds to an action requires more than what can be seen: robots must account for environmental factors that are neither directly observable nor explicitly specified, from physical properties such as friction and mass to human-defined environmental rules. We introduce T2-Z for test-time optimization of environment latents, which augments a robotic world model with a learnable environment latent to condition world predictions. This compact latent captures underlying environmental variation without supervision of what environmental factors exist or what values they takearXiv AI/ML
Rethinking Routing Exploration in Modern Mixture-of-Experts
Mixture-of-experts (MoE) models have become an important approach for scaling model parameters. Modern MoE architectures increasingly combine two design choices: fine-grained expert segmentation and shared experts. The former increases expressiveness by enabling more expert combinations at a fixed activation ratio, and the latter introduces experts that are active for every token. We identify an exploration dilemma between these designs: shared experts can make routing less exploratory by reducing the variability of token representations. This conflicts with the greater need for exploration inApple Machine Learning Research
The Design Space of Tri-Modal Masked Diffusion Models
Discrete diffusion models have emerged as strong alternatives to autoregressive language models, with recent work initializing and finetuning a base unimodal model for bi-modal generation. Diverging from previous approaches, we introduce the first tri-modal Masked Diffusion Models (MDM) pretrained from scratch on text, image-text, and audio-text data. We systematically analyze multimodal scaling laws, modality mixing ratios, noise schedules, batch-size effects and provide optimized inference sampling defaults. Our batch-size analysis yields a novel stochastic differential equation (SDE) based…IEEE Spectrum AI
Google DeepMind’s New Resident Philosopher Tackles AI Ethics
How should humans relate to generative AI ? In what ways do we, or should we, treat a large language model (LLM) as if it were a person? If an AI became conscious, how could we tell? Does it make sense to think AI could someday have moral rights? These are among the cognitive and ethical questions that occupied philosopher Henry Shevlin at Cambridge University’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence . But last May, Shevlin became part of the growing cohort of philosophers who work inside leading artificial intelligence companies. Though he remains active at Cambridge, he now spendsIEEE Spectrum AI
Meet the Anthropic Engineer Keeping Its AI Agent Trustworthy
If you’ve ever wondered how Claude and similar AI agents can answer complex questions in seconds and where they get the information, you’re not alone. Gurmeet Saran works to find that answer every day as an engineer at Anthropic in San Francisco, the AI research company behind Claude. The IEEE senior member is developing an infrastructure to understand the mechanics behind the chatbot’s behavior and to ensure its underlying architecture produces reliable outputs.
